A whimsical and flavorful cake perfect for Halloween gatherings, featuring layers of moist chocolate cake and rich frosting.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • ¼ cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Food coloring (orange and black)
  • Candy eyes
  • Halloween-themed sprinkles

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans to prevent sticking.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, beat the eggs. Then add the milk, oil, and vanilla extract, mixing well until combined.
  4. Gradually add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients. Stir until just combined; be careful not to overmix.
  5. Slowly stir in the boiling water. The batter will be thin, which is normal.
  6. Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  7. Let the cakes cool in the pans for about 10 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  8. In a large bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy. Gradually add the powdered sugar, beating until combined. Add heavy cream and vanilla, then beat until fluffy. Divide the frosting into two bowls and tint one with orange food coloring and the other with black.
  9. Once the cakes are completely cool, place one layer on a serving platter. Spread a layer of orange frosting on top. Place the second layer on top and frost the entire cake with black frosting.
  10. Use the candy eyes and Halloween-themed sprinkles to create a spooky design on top of the cake.

Notes

Ensure cakes are completely cool before frosting to prevent melting. Use quality cocoa powder for best results.
