Ingredients
3 cups all-purpose flour
2 ½ teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
2 cups granulated sugar
1 cup unsalted butter, softened
4 large eggs
1 ½ cups buttermilk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 cups unsalted butter, softened (for frosting)
5-6 cups powdered sugar (for frosting)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for frosting)
Black food coloring (optional)
Orange food coloring (optional)
Gummy spiders, creepy candies, and chocolate decorations (for decoration)
Instructions
Prep the oven and pans: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour three round cake pans (6-inch, 8-inch, and 10-inch).
Mix the dry ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
Cream the butter and sugar: In a large mixing bowl, cream the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy, about 4-5 minutes.
Add the eggs and vanilla: Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Then, stir in the vanilla extract.
Combine the wet and dry ingredients: Gradually add the flour mixture and buttermilk, alternating between the two. Start and end with the flour mixture, mixing until just combined.
Divide and bake: Divide the batter evenly among the prepared pans. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean. Let cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring to wire racks.
Make the frosting: Beat the softened butter until creamy, gradually adding the powdered sugar until smooth. Add the vanilla extract and tint if desired.
Assemble the cake: Start with the largest layer, spread a layer of frosting on top, and stack the next tier. Repeat until all tiers are stacked.
Frost the cake: Apply a crumb coat to seal crumbs, refrigerate for 20 minutes, then frost the entire cake with a thicker layer.
Decorate: Top the cake with gummy spiders, creepy candies, and other spooky decorations.
Notes
Ensure even baking and do not rush the cooling process. Level cake layers before assembling for best results.
